20 The Birth of the Son of God (Luke 2)

Long ago at a very significant point in history, in a small town called Bethlehem, there was a special night. The sky was filled with bright stars, and in a humble manger in a stable, something amazing was about to happen.

In Bethlehem lived a young woman named Mary and her husband Joseph. Mary was a kind and pure-hearted woman, and Joseph was a good and just man. One day, an angel of the Lord appeared to Mary and told her that she would be the mother of a special child, the Son of God. Mary gratefully accepted God's blessing and eagerly awaited the baby's arrival.

But that year, the Emperor Caesar Augustus decreed that all people must register in their hometown. So Mary and Joseph, who were from the town of Bethlehem, were forced to make a long journey there on foot. Mary was pregnant, and the journey was not an easy one.

When they arrived in Bethlehem, they found that the town was crowded with people who had also come to register. There was no place available in the inns, and Mary and Joseph were forced to seek shelter in a humble stable.

That night, in that simple stable, Mary gave birth to her baby, whom they named Jesus, just as the angel had told them. They wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, where the animals ate their food.

On that same night, in the nearby hills, there were shepherds tending their flocks. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them, surrounded by a bright light. The shepherds were frightened, but the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord."
