Long ago, the scriptures tell the story of a very special king named Solomon in the land of Israel. Solomon was the son of King David and became the king of Israel after his father's death. Though he was young, God had given him a wise heart and a desire to rule with justice.

One day, while Solomon was in the city of Gibeon, God appeared to him in a dream and said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." Solomon, knowing that ruling a kingdom was a great responsibility, asked God for something special. He did not ask for wealth or power, but instead said, "Give me a wise heart to rule your people with justice and discernment."

God was very pleased with Solomon's request and granted him not only wisdom but also riches and honor. Solomon became the wisest and richest king that had ever existed. People from all over Israel came to hear his wisdom and seek his counsel in difficult matters.

One day, two women came before the king with a baby. Both claimed to be the mother of the child and argued over who the baby belonged to. Solomon, with his wisdom, proposed a unique solution. He ordered that the baby be cut in half and each woman be given a portion.

The first woman, frightened by this proposal, begged the king not to do that and to give the baby to the other woman instead of killing it. The second woman, however, accepted the idea of dividing the baby in two.

King Solomon immediately knew which of the two women was the true mother. The true mother was the one who was willing to give up her right to motherhood rather than see her child hurt. Solomon handed the baby over to the woman who showed love and compassion, and everyone realized the king's great wisdom.
